Q. How does Sourcelight work?

A. Sourcelight works by comparing your movie ratings with millions of others to find the best recommendations just for you. Our software application locates patterns within our users' likes and dislikes, and analyzes them to find a variety of movie choices consistent with your individual tastes. With each movie you rate, Sourcelight gets smarter about the kinds of movies you'd like to see. The more movies you rate, the better the recommendations get!

Q. How much does it cost to use Sourcelight?

A. It's free! Visit the site as often as you like to rate movies, get information about thousands of films, and see how your recommendations have been updated with new selections. You pay us back by improving our community average with your ratings.

Q. Why should I rate more movies?

A. With each movie you rate, Sourcelight gets a better idea of your tastes, and can more specifically pinpoint your preferences. As you rate more movies, watch the "Your Recommendations" box on the upper right hand side of the page. The list changes before your eyes, allowing you to see how each movie you rate fine-tunes our selections for you!

Q. What is a Wish List?

A. The Wish List feature allows you to set aside movies that intrigue you for later reference. Simply click the yellow "Add to Wish List" button to save any movie to a list of titles that interest you. Then, consult your handpicked Sourcelight Wish List the next time you draw a blank on what to rent!

Q. What is an Average User Rating?

A. Toward the bottom of an individual movie's "More Details" page, a six-star scale displays what other people thought about that movie. Sourcelight obtains this rating by taking an average of all our users' opinions about that particular movie. This feature turns a community into a helpful film critic!

Q. Can I go back and see how I've rated movies in the past?

A. Yes! Just click on the "You have rated" link, which appears in the yellow bar at the top of any page. All the movies you've previously rated will be grouped according to your star rating. Take this opportunity to re-rate any film, or browse the "Movies You Love" to find a favorite you'd like to revisit.

Q. What is the difference between "Rate these Related Titles..." and "If You Like this Movie, You'll Like These..."?

A. Related Titles are hand-chosen by Sourcelight staff members who have recognized special relationships between two movies, often based on corresponding themes, settings, personnel or plot points. The feature we call "If You Like this Movie, You'll Like These..." uses Sourcelight's Discovery Engine to present suggested films.

Q. Can Sourcelight tell me how I'll feel about movies that don't appear on my Recommendations List?

A. Yes! As you browse and rate movies, you will notice that many offer the option to "Get Predicted Rating," through a link just below the star scale. When you choose this option, Sourcelight will ask you to rate a few specifically chosen films. This information will allow us to predict how much you'll like one particular movie.

Q. What do the different colored stars mean?

A. You will notice that the stars in the ratings scale variously appear in green, yellow and blue. When you've rated a movie, your rating is represented in green stars, with the text "Your Rating" displayed below. Sourcelight's predictions for how much you'll like certain movies you haven't yet rated appear in yellow, with the words "Sourcelight Prediction For You" underneath. Finally, Sourcelight indicates how its community of users felt about a particular film by showing blue stars above the phrase "Average User Rating."

Q. What is Sourcelight's privacy policy?

A. The amount of personal information floating around on the internet can be downright scary. At Sourcelight, we understand the misgivings you might have about providing personal information in conjunction with your opinions. All that we require from you is an email address and password (of your choice) so you can access your Sourcelight Recommendations. Rest assured, as a Sourcelight user, your email address will never be disclosed to anyone else. Period. End of story.

Q. Does Sourcelight use cookies?

A. Yes. Sourcelight's Movie Discovery site uses these small files, stored on your computer's hard drive, to recognize your browser with each visit to our site. Using cookies saves you from having to sign in each time you visit. Because Sourcelight's Movie Discovery experience is highly personalized, we require that cookies be enabled to use the site. If your browser notifies you about cookies, please choose to accept them so you can make the most of your Sourcelight Movie Discovery experience.
