The Genesis of an Idea:
Help People Discover Great Movies
THE IDEA STARTED WITH A MOVIE BUFF, TWO COMPUTER EXPERTS AND TEN THOUSAND VIDEOS.
Back in the day, the movie buff owned a video store, and he saw how overwhelmed people would get by all the choices and how often they’d leave in frustration, either empty-handed or settling for something they didn’t really want—lousy ways to spend a Saturday night.
Wouldn’t it be great, Sourcelight’s founders thought, if every customer experienced their own version of the perfect video store, personalized just for them? When you’d visit this store, the inventory would magically transform itself into shelves of movies perfect for you, special displays would be targeted to your interests, and the proverbial question of “Will I like this movie?” would always be met with excellent advice.
Sourcelight’s founders set out to make this scenario, if not literally, then practically a reality. Using their expertise in the field of entertainment retailing and Pattern Recognition technology, they formed Entertainment Decisions in 1992, which later became Sourcelight Technologies. With the goal of making personalized shopping a reality, the company collected movie preferences and provided consumers with personalized recommendation lists. With humble beginnings using pen and paper ballots, Sourcelight evolved into a cutting-edge interactive technology available on the web, in-store kiosks, and wireless devices.
Sourcelight’s Clientele Spans the Globe
From Dallas to Denmark, Sourcelight’s technology is used by clients as diverse as they are distant. Clients such as Blockbuster, Comcast, digitarian, Hollywood Video and over 1,200 other video retailers have relied on Sourcelight to facilitate a one-to-one dialogue with their customers.
The Ideal Combination of Technical and Industry Expertise
Building on years of technical expertise—including pioneering Pattern Recognition work that served as the basis for Big Blue, the IBM computer chess program that beat Gary Kasparov—Sourcelight’s software engineers have refined our technology to create the Discovery Guide, providing the most accurate personalization.
Understanding how people make choices about the movies they watch, combined with an intimate knowledge of film and the home entertainment market, allows Sourcelight to harness our technology in ways that most benefit you and your customers. Your customers get useful information that’s personal and insightful; it’s meaningful because it accurately reflects what they like. On the other side, you can intelligently merchandise, putting the right product in front of the right customers.
